Imported vs local fittings: when each one is the right call

Imported tiles cost 3× local. Imported faucets cost 4× local. Both make sense in some places and waste money in others. Here's how to choose.

Imported vs local fittings: when each one is the right call

Imported isn't always better. Local isn't always cheaper-and-worse. The right call depends on where the fitting lives in your house, how often you'll touch it, and whether you'll be able to replace a part five years from now.

Where imported is the right call

  • Kitchen mixer tap. You'll use it five times a day for fifteen years. A Grohe or Hansgrohe mixer is worth the PKR 30,000 premium because every other one will fail at the cartridge.
  • Main bathroom shower set. Same logic. The cartridge in a local shower set fails inside three years, sometimes one. An imported thermostatic mixer lasts ten.
  • Main entry door. Solid hardwood, imported teak or mahogany. The local engineered doors warp in Lahore summers.
  • Air conditioning compressor. Daikin, Mitsubishi, or LG inverter. The local-assembled units run 60% more electricity and fail at 5 years instead of 12.

Where local is the right call

  • Wall tiles. Master, Tuscany, and Sonex are now made on Spanish equipment and the visual difference vs imported Spanish tile is small. Save the PKR 400/sqft.
  • Floor tile in secondary bedrooms. Local porcelain handles the wear fine.
  • Internal doors. Local engineered doors in non-master bedrooms are fine.
  • Standard switch plates. Clipsal/Schneider made-in-Pakistan switches are identical to the imported version. No reason to pay 4× for the same product just because it shipped from Europe.
  • Cabling. Pakistan Cables and Fast Cables both meet IEC standards. No reason to import wire.

Where the local-imported split flips with the brand

For sanitary fittings, the cliff between Master/Porta and Grohe/Hansgrohe is huge. But for cement, the local-made Maple Leaf and DG are world-class — better than many imported. The rule isn't "imported always better." The rule is "category by category."

Spare parts is the real question

If you can't get a replacement cartridge for your imported Italian shower set five years from now because the brand pulled out of Pakistan, the premium was wasted. Ask the local dealer how long they've stocked the brand and what the spare-part backstop looks like. We always specify brands with at least 10 years of distributor presence in Pakistan.
